The trial set for Thursday in federal court in Manhattan centers on whether Rudy Giuliani must surrender assets to two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, who won a defamation judgment against him. Giuliani, who is 80 years old, failed to appear on time, and his representatives did not immediately comment on his delay.
The case will not revisit whether Giuliani defamed Freeman and Moss or the size of the judgment against him—those issues have already been decided. Instead, the court will determine if Giuliani must forfeit valuable assets to satisfy the judgment. Among these assets are his Palm Beach condominium, which he claims as his homestead, and three World Series rings, which he asserts were given to his son Andrew in 2018. However, Freeman and Moss’s lawyers dispute these claims, arguing that Giuliani maintained his New York apartment as his residence until it was surrendered in the fall and that the rings were never properly documented as a gift to Andrew.
In a recent deposition, Giuliani explained that he is “not impoverished” but has limited access to his assets due to various restrictions placed on his accounts. He described his financial situation, stating that he lacks access to cars, credit cards, and cash. His lawyers argue that his bankruptcy filing was dismissed due to his failure to cooperate and provide transparency.
The election workers’ lawyers also pointed out discrepancies in Giuliani’s tax records, specifically regarding the World Series rings. They claim Giuliani did not list the rings as a gift to his son and argue that Andrew did not insure or report them in his own tax filings.
Giuliani’s total assets are estimated to be worth around $10 million, with the Palm Beach property valued at over $3 million. He has already surrendered several other assets, including his New York apartment, a vintage Mercedes, and luxury watches. The judgment against him stems from false claims he made about Freeman and Moss’s involvement in election fraud, which led to death threats and significant distress for the women.
